Homelessness: This Is What It Looks Like

3 minute read

What do you think when you hear the word ‘homeless’? You might associate homelessness with criminals, substance abuse and ‘scrounging’. But is this truly the reality? According to crisis.org.uk, there are 54,000 homeless people in the United Kingdom, so it can be very easy to forget that these are individual people with individual stories.

A Bolton photographer, Julie Lomax, has teamed up with the Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme to create a project on the ‘Faces of Bolton’. Taking pictures of homeless young people across Bolton, the photos display the integrity and strength of each individual.

We caught up with Julie and she told us why she got involved with the project: “The idea was to show the real face of homelessness. It happens to normal people with normal lives.”

Also as part of the project, one individual wrote a poem:

“Love is not a smack in the face

In you I’ve made a big mistake,

My soul is mine not yours to take,

I’m not being your punch bag no more,

A lot goes on behind closed doors,

You say every time you won’t do it again,

Too scared to even talk to my friends,

Love is not a smack in the face, or saying I will get no one better and you can’t be replaced.

You say ‘together forever no matter what’, but you’re just a bully and this has to stop,

I’m too young to be afraid to die,

So now I’m done and this is no lie.”

You and I could find ourselves homeless – after all, it’s as close as one pay day away. If you, or someone you know, finds themselves in a situation like this, Backup can help. Speak to them – you can find out more by clicking here.
