Leadership Programme

BOLTON LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

Youth Leads UK helps build young people’s confidence and independence through the Leadership Programme – a 12-week initiative in which young people participate in weekly workshops which tackle employability skills, writing, and social action, giving them the tools they need to become future leaders. The sessions covered CV help, interview skills, article writing, and the much-anticipated fashion shoot. Young people’s confidence and leadership skills improved significantly since doing the sessions. In this cohort, 23 young people attended our programme from July – September.

CAREERS

Young people had the opportunity to learn more about accounting and finance when they visited RSM UK and KPMG Manchester. Thanks to Kevin Duffy, Regional Managing Partner at RSM, and Jo Meehan, Associate Director at KPMG, young people felt their knowledge of the sector improved significantly. They also found their journeys inspiring, as neither had a traditional route into their respective jobs.

“I feel more informed of the accountancy job, and for how office life feels. I also got a chance to learn that accountancy involves helping and saving the businesses of others, forming long-term bonds with the clients.” – Amelia, 16, Youth Leads UK Leadership Programme Participant.

SOCIAL ACTION

This cohort of young people decided to do a social action project aiming to raise awareness about global social injustices by equipping young people with the tools and skills needed to effectively voice their concerns and inspire positive change. They decided to create a toolkit that raises awareness and inspires young people to take action on different social injustices that are going on around the world, for example: The lack of NHS funding, genocide around the world, lack of safe youth spaces, racism and targeted attacks.

The toolkit covered:

  • Everyday Activism – Learn about how you can take small actions to make a difference.
  • Boycotting Effectively – Learn how to choose what to boycott and communicate your intentions.
  • Organising Peaceful Protests – Get tips on planning, legal considerations, and safety.
  • Writing Impactful Letters to MPs/Councillors – Use our templates and advocacy tips to voice your concerns to policymakers. Who to contact.
  • Creating Social Media Campaigns – Develop strategies for impactful and far-reaching online campaigns.

23 young people

will graduate from the Programme in November 2024

MAGAZINE

Young people from this cohort wrote articles for our upcoming magazine about a range of topics that they were passionate about. These included exam tips, the hottest new video games, health awareness and more. They also did a fashion shoot themed ‘The Past, Present and Future’, planning outfits and coming up with creative poses which emulated the theme.

I think overall the experience was great
as well as all the staff. It gave me routine
in the summer and a place to get involved
with the local community, meet new people
and learn new skills.”
