Leadership Programme

OLDHAM LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

Youth Leads UK helps build young people’s confidence and independence through the Leadership Programme – a 12-week initiative in which young people participate in weekly workshops which tackle employability skills, writing, and social action, giving them the tools they need to become future leaders. This version of the programme was done virtually, which meant the programme was accessible to young people from across Greater Manchester. In this cohort, 7 young people attended our programme from January – April.

Sessions

The sessions covered CV help, interview skills, article writing, and the much-anticipated fashion shoot. Young people’s confidence and leadership skills improved significantly since doing the sessions.

“Every young and motivated individual possesses the capacity to accomplish anything with a clear vision for change.” – Raza, 16, Youth Leads UK Leadership Programme Participant.

CAREERS

A highlight of the programme was the Industry Insight session young people attended. Young people had the opportunity to learn more about the media industry from Lydia German, Senior Communications and Content Officer at Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

Thanks to Lydia’s extensive experience and unique journey into her current role, young people felt their knowledge of the sector improved significantly.

“The industry insight session was captivating. Whether it’s related to the environment, education, technology, or beyond, nurturing a visionary mindset is crucial to driving impactful transformation.” – Youth Leads UK Leadership Programme Participant.

Social Action

This cohort of young people decided to do a social action project to address gender-based violence in their communities. Young people researched and spoke to experts working to tackle gender-based violence and further their understanding of how small actions can significantly impact us as a society.

They created colourful posters to send to schools, colleges, and youth organisations to share more information around the attitudes and underlying inequalities that lead to gender-based violence – their aim was to encourage young people to have open discussions as a group and also give background information on the issue.

They also created social media assets and sign-posted content on social media in a meaningful way, widening their reach and spreading their message even further.

“It is crucial for us to speak out against these issues to close this chapter of hate forever and create a sense of unity. Youth voice is particularly powerful and effective in promoting equality and dignity for all genders. Since silence eliminates the courage and dignity that is needed to address these issues daily, our project aims to bring about change and inspire others to raise their voices against violence.” – Raza, 16

I think it was a good experience and
a great way of boosting confidence.
