As the Vice Chair, I’ve been able to lead discussions and share ideas on developing Youth Leads UK’s strategy and policies. I have had the opportunity to represent the Youth Advisory Board at Trustee board meetings and other events. It’s been a very important role for me because I get the opportunity to advocate for youth voice and empowerment, and as a first-generation, South Asian Muslim woman, I embody the representation I wish to see in youth leadership and decision-making.

Your Role, Your Journey
We work on the principle of ‘potential not polished’. If you don’t have all the skills listed or don’t feel confident with something, we still encourage you to apply – most things can be taught, and you will have the opportunity to practise new skills within the safety of the YAB.
You must:
- Be aged between 14 and 25 years old
- Be living, working or studying in Greater Manchester
You should:
- Be comfortable working within a group, sharing experiences & ideas
- Have a passion for youth voice, leadership & decision-making
- Be empathetic, considerate and open to giving & receiving constructive feedback
- Be able to use your unique experience and circumstances to support the charity to be as inclusive and accessible as possible.
As a Youth Advisory Board member, you’ll work alongside our Trustees and team to help keep Youth Leads UK youth-informed and relevant.
Your responsibilities could include:
-
Giving feedback on our strategy and programmes
-
Bringing your voice to key decisions and projects
-
Representing Youth Leads UK at events and meetings
-
Helping shape campaigns, partnerships and services
-
Supporting our alumni network and external relationships
We know this sounds like a lot, but don’t worry, we’ll support you every step of the way. Your responsibilities will grow as your confidence does, and you’ll have space to lead in ways that suit you.
All of the young people we work with have access to support from our staff and other new opportunities to take up while working in their role. This includes things like:
- Support building your profile as a youth champion.
- Opportunities for speaking publicly at our events.
- Writing for Youth Leads Magazine, which is completely youth-led.
- Experiences for working with us or with our huge network of business and charity partners.
- Employability support, such as CV writing or interview skills practice.
- A reference from us for future jobs or voluntary positions
- Access to a mentor (18+)
A typical commitment for a Youth Advisory Board Member is:
-
Around 3–5 hours per month
-
We ask for attendance at at least three sessions a year
-
Meetings usually take place in Greater Manchester (MediaCity or the city centre) on weekends between 11am and 3pm
-
Online resources are available where necessary
We know life can get busy, so we’ll always do our best to be flexible and keep things manageable. This is a voluntary role; however, we expect members to attend at least three sessions per year.
- What is the Youth Advisory Board?
The Youth Advisory Board is a group of young people who come together to provide insights, suggestions, and recommendations on our Youth Leads UK’s programs and initiatives, ensuring that the perspectives of youth are heard and acted upon. - Who can apply to be on the Youth Advisory Board?
We welcome applications from young people aged 14-25 who live, work or study in Greater Manchester. - How long is the term for a Youth Advisory Board member?
Board members serve for a term of one year, with the possibility of renewal. - How do I apply for the Youth Advisory Board?
You can apply by filling out the online application form on our website. The form includes questions about your experience, interests, and why you want to be part of the Board. - What is the deadline for applications?
Applications are ongoing throughout the year - What happens after I submit my application?
We review all submissions and shortlist candidates for a taster session - How often does the Board meet?
The Board will meet approximately 5 times a year, just before each of our Board of Trustees meetings. Additional sessions might be held throughout the year, depending on what’s going on at Youth Leads UK. - Do I get paid for being on the Board?
This is a voluntary role. However, we do offer your travel and food expenses every time you do anything for Youth Leads UK. - What if I can’t make every meeting?
That’s ok! We know life gets in the way sometimes. All we ask is that you let us know as soon as you do that you won’t be attending a meeting. This allows time for you to contribute in advance, and for us to schedule time for you to catch up if needed. - What if I have additional needs?
If you require any additional needs support, Youth Leads UK will work together with you to ensure that the Board is fully accessible and that you feel supported when undertaking YAB activities.
After you’ve applied, here’s what you can expect from us:
- Once you submit your application, we’ll read through your answers and may invite you to a short informal chat with a member of our team.
- This isn’t an interview, it’s just a chance for us to get to know you better, and for you to ask any questions about the role or what to expect.
- We’ll let you know either way once decisions are made. And remember, we’re not looking for polished answers, just passion, potential, and people who care.
If you’re passionate about making a difference, we’ll support you every step of the way. We’re excited to hear from you!
