IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM

YOUTH VOICE

Youth Leads UK’s young people were part of a focus group where they had the chance to share their thoughts on war and conflict.

The session gathered young people’s views through writing, doodling, and discussion activities.

The main aim of the session was to support the Imperial War Museum North in developing its first youth collective, shaped by, for, and with local young people so that they are empowered to develop their own projects, events and activities (inside the museum, community or other spaces) as part of the museum’s programmes.

Youth Input

Four young people gave their ideas on youth-led projects which the Imperial War Museum could implement into their programmes with an interactive mind-map activity. Some ideas included workshops, festival events, movie screenings, and book clubs.

Young people also gave their input on how to engage local young people. Ideas included a bigger push on social media to promote programmes, organising events with drinks and food, and letting young people be involved in the decision-making.

FEEL HEARD

The workshop provided a platform for young people to feel heard, valued, and actively involved in shaping the museum’s future.

By offering a space to share their lived experiences and creative ideas, the session highlighted the importance of youth voices in fostering a sense of belonging within cultural institutions.

Young people’s suggestions, such as interactive events and a stronger social media presence, showcase their desire for a safe, inclusive, and engaging space.

IN SUMMARY

The session at the Imperial War Museum successfully brought together young people to share their perspectives and ideas. This session was a big step toward building a youth-led collective!

“I’m excited to see how the museum uses what we said and I hope they take on our feedback. Whenever you try and do something youth-focused we need young people involved because they have lived experience and can provide real advice.

If the Imperial War Museum North tries to do something for young people, they need their opinions. If you are starting something and have no interaction in that area, you consult with experts e.g. finance. It is the same with young people. ” – Maisha, 18

“I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity of the young people at Youth Leads UK. Their insightful feedback on how Imperial War Museum North can better connect with and engage young people in Manchester was invaluable. The work being done by Youth Leads UK in empowering and supporting these young voices is truly inspiring, and I look forward to future collaborations.” – Bo Olawoye, session facilitator
